The Flash season finale review
The Flash concludes its first season with episode 23, Fast Enough. With Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash now in captivity, will Barry runs back in time to save his mom ? Hit the jump to see my thought on this finale and season 1 overall. BEWARE : HEAVY SPOILER
To start off, while it is a very surprisingly emotional finale, I could not believe they pull off an Arrow season 1 finale again where there finale ends on a cliffhanger. As a recap,Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne/Reverse Flash who was captured in the previous episode offers Barry to go back and save his mom and exchange of him going back to his future time. The whole episode basically dealing with whether or not he should go back in time to do so.
The plot overall was okay. The episode starts really strong until halfway through and started to lose interest (internet connection could be one of the problem), but there were too many talking and insecurity happening, I was just lets get done with this. There several moments that surely were the highlight of this episode. The speed force vision was one, I'll talk about that down the line. However, the dialogue between Martin Stein and Eddie Thawne, Cisco and Wells, Barry and his dad, also Barry and his mom were all great.
While some of the moment may look cheesy but they all make sense to be in the episode. Caitlin Ronnie wedding make sense because the world might gonna end, might as well get married before that happen. With that sense, there are some that was just put for the sake of the plot. The 'screw the future' moments was there sorely so there will be some emotional moment when Eddie pull off a Looper move. It was a little bit unnecessary because you could done that with a dialogue between Eddie and Eobard and it would be more powerful.
I still couldn't wrap off the reason why Barry decided not to save his mom. I know they tries to establish that he doesn't want to lose anything that he had in the present but the turning point was when he and his future self meets eye and future Barry say no. That all it takes to change your decision ?
The effect for this episode is spectacular. It is very obvious there be keeping the budget for this episode. The last scene in which the singularity happen and everything is being suck out to black whole look realistic and kudos to them to do that in a daylight despite being a little bit blue tint which I guess to cover the effect a little bit.
Lets talk Easter egg. One that excite people the most is Caitlin Snow's Killer Frost. There is some hint that both Cisco and Caitlin is indeed affected by the accelerator but their transformation is much slower which I assume would be explain in the second season. Hawkgirl make an appearance sans her wing and a quick Jay Garrick reference. The writer has confirm alternate earth will be explored in the future season. I hope it John Wesley Shipp who play Jay Garrick.
The ending was a little bit interesting because it mirrors Crisis of Infinite Earth which also what the future paper Wells have inspired from making it seems like the whole season is a paradox of some. I kind of wish he ended up in an alternate timeline because he save his mom and gone through the flashpoint storyline but with the series shared the universe with Arrow and the upcoming Legends of Tomorrow, I guess they couldn't mess with the timeline that much.
Overall, this is a much better both season and finale compared to Arrow and I am excited to see where the series move forward. I guess Legends of Tomorrow will be closely related to The Flash looking at how the story goes. I give the season finale and the whole season 4.0 out 5.0. Overall a very strong season, excited things to come with this series. Some flaws and weakness here and there but it did not take you out of the series.
