Mad Max Fury Road review

Mad Max Fury Road set up to relive the Mad Max franchise after the badly accepted Beyond Thunderdome. Can this old franchise rise back and stand out among other movies ? Hit the jump to know my thought.

To start this review let me say this, this is a movie that you can just jump in and enjoy the ride without the need of prior knowledge of any of the Mad Max movies. The movie did a very good job of establishing character so the audience can still follow who they are despite the lack of dialogue.  There is some exposition in the beginning as to set up the backdrop but everything else you can infer from the movie itself.

The story is about Furiousa played by Charlize Theron helping the brides of the big bad guy (I think his name is Immortal Joe) escape to somewhere called as the place of green. Max was thrown in the middle of this conflict when he was caught by the big bad guy as a blood bag (supply of blood) for his minions.

For a two hours movie, this movie has a very little amount of dialogue and most of them are gibberish and is unnecessary to follow along the story. I don't know if this is just me but Tom Hardy's voice is seemingly added later in the movie as it feels a little bit out of place. There is only one score used throughout the movie and it function is specifically to make the already intense movie more intense, more of that later.

Story wise, it is just action from one scene to another. There are some interesting ideas or themes in it but it wasn't really touch that much. One in particular is gender equality and also human rights , however it is up to you to figure it out yourself.

Performance wise, the highlights is no doubt Charlize Theron. There is some moment where you forgot she is a woman and that is an achievement. Nicholas Hoult played a very realistically crazy guy and shockingly has a very good character arc. Tom Hardy was just fine being Max. There is a hint of his Bane voice at times and again the fact that his voice feel added later in the movie was a little disturbing for me. For the brides, they don't really have much thing to do than being damsel in distress.

In term of make up, it was gross but spectacular. The revealing of the big bad guy in particular had such a gross make up but it was done very quick so it didn't take you out from the movie. The prop feels very real. I don't know how much of it is CGI but it feels like they build every single of them and destroy every single one of them. Some of the design was very interesting and fun to look at making you immerse more and more to the world.

Effect wise, there is not time where you feel like something on the screen was created by CGI. Everything look so real. There is one scene that stands out in term of the effect which is the night chase. It was a very bold choice to have it the way it is but it really works for the tone of the movie.

The only problem that I have is the movie is so intense. Most of the scene happens in the day and they are very unsaturated in term color making every scene so vibrant, that itself make the movie intense. Added with numerous number of close up, quick cut, and intense music making it more and more intense. The movie is clearly follow the three point story telling where the movie keep getting intense and peak at the climax (where every single thing that I mentioned earlier happen) and then slow down to its resolution. The problem is the color palette chosen has  put it at 10 out of 10 in the scale of intensity so the climax was probably 12 out of 10. Despite that, it did not take me out of the movie but I think it would if I watch it in 3D.

Overall, it was a new experience for me to watch such a movie. Would I recommend it ? This is a very niche movie but if you want to experience something super different then go ahead. There is some underlying theme within it but it is up to you to figure it out.  In the end, I gave the movie 4.5 out 5.0. It is great movie despite the lack of story in it however, I wish it would be less intense.
