Batman : Return of Caped Crusader review
DC Animated broke their three movie schedule release with a fourth one in the form of Batman : Return of the Caped Crusader. Marking the return of the famous 1966's Batman to the screen, can this movie lives up to DC Animated reputation and its own series ? Hit the jump to find out.
Before I go further, I would like to say up front, this is the best DC animated movies after quite some time. It would be up there with Red Hood and Flashpoint Paradox. It is no wonder the studio released a sequel right away with Two Face. I only really remember part of the 1966 show when I was a kid, but this a way upgrade from that show. It brought what works from it (at times to its detriment), and blend it with modern times comic book movie.
However before I dive in into the review, lets talk about the plot of the movie. The movie revolves around Batman and Robin attempt to foil the crime done by now-partners Joker, Penguin, The Riddler and Catwoman. However Robin then realized he may have a bigger problem that these four villains and he might even need to team up with Catwoman to stop it.
In term of plot, this movie surprisingly has a similar plot with Batman:Bad Blood but at the end of the ridiculous spectrum. It also has all the tropes you expect from the 1966 show. From the ridiculous riddle-solving by Robin, to the Batman detective machine, and even all sort of bat-themed gadget used throughout the movie (that includes an anti-antidotes).
Other that the tropes from the 1966 show, you also get some homage from the famous Batman story. The constant flirtation of Batman and Catwoman, the running gag that both Batman and Robin is a couple and the worst ending from Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. In terms of the 1966's show homages, some of them might go unnoticed or confused if you're not familiar with the show itself.
In term of voice cast, the focus is focus at the three original cast that returning for the movie. Burt Ward surprisingly done a good job as a young man voice. Adam West and Julia Newmar unfortunately you can feel the age from the voice. Though Adam West make a splendid Bruce Wayne's voice in this from his old voice.
The animation are being mixed with CGI. It doesn't bother it at much as DC Animated has done this to their other movie but this is the first time it is so obvious and they tend to show-off the use of it as well. The fighting scene is much more simpler and with the additional of the famous sound-effect writing, you can't say much on the fighting scene.
Overall, this is one of the DC Animated movie that I enjoy due to its comedic value and that what makes it a very different beast compared to previous released. In the end, I gave this movie a 4.5 out 5.0. It is a very enjoyable movie to watch and must-watch if you're a fan of DC Animated in general and Batman's fan specifically. It's not a perfect movie, but it flaws doesn't hurt it.
What do you think of Batman:Return of the Caped Crusader ? Sound off your thought in the comment section. I know I promise a Girl on the Train review, but unfortunately I couldn't get it at the cinema nearby so I guess it will not happen then.
