Reviewstravaganza : Deadpool

After a lot of push including a leak test footage, Deadpool finally hit the cinema. Can this movie lives up to its hype, fix the damage done to this character in Wolverine Origin and return faith to Ryan Reynold in its acting career ? Hit the jump to find out my thought on this movie.

This reviewstravaganza will only be semi-spoiler because honestly if I spoiled all the jokes this movie will not be enjoyable. To start off, I will say that I am not a big Deadpool fan. I never bought his comic, never read any of the comic with him appearing but I do know what separates him from any other comic character and why is he becomes such a fan favorites despite relatively young (he was created in the 90's).

With that said, Deadpool's plot is basically the very basic of a superhero origin story. In fact, line this with Wolverine Origin and it would be almost the same except this one is way better. Wade Wilson was previously a part of a special strike force before leaving it and become sort of guy for hired. He was then suffered with cancer and joint a program believed to create superhuman but at the same time cured his cancer. The program gone wrong, his face got messed up and now he's on the hunt for the person responsible. See told you, it is the same as Wolverine Origin.

One thing I like about Deadpool is that it takes all its storyline seriously. The love story and the cancer issue were not meant as a joke and it can easily be turned into a drama about fighting for cancer if not for all the jokes and spandex. The superhero story line really give it all to the campiness of matching suits, spandex unlike the black costumes used in the previous X-men movie which give us a breath of different.

The cast were all fit the character and perfect in their role. Ryan Reynold was born for this role. While it might not be him in the suits most of the time, he does have good comedic timing for the voice and perfectly embodied the character of Deadpool. Colossus fit the movies as the serious character give the balance of the movie with all the wacky character. Negasonic Teenage Warhead is one of the stand out in term of the look. Brianna Hildenbrand was almost unrecognizable in its character and again must love the yellow and black suits.

The villain on the other hand seems a little bit generic, Ed Skrein's Ajax don't have like a fancy superpower as well as Gina Carano's Angel Dust. That is probably because all the CGI budget is being used at Deadpool, Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

In term of the look of the movie, as I mentioned earlier the movie took all part of its storyline seriously hence the look. You can easily take out part of the movie and arrange into a trailer of horror, romantic and superhero action movie and nobody would feel weird. Wade Wilson scarred look actually become less grossed as the movie progress. You see him the first time it actually looks like in the comic and a little bit like Freddy Kruger but it become less as the movie progress. You could say it is because of his healing power.

Lets talk a little bit about CGI, the CGI is definitely not perfect. Deadpool actually look CGI most of the time, well he is as the white lenses were added later in post (I almost thought it would move and react but it just stay still). Same with Colossus. Negasonic though, her power look awesome and some of the most believable effect in the movie.
Now, we come to the jokes. First off, if you have watch the trailer, you actually have watch most of the jokes. There is some funny jokes but you have to be first well verse into Fox's X-Men universe, well verse in US pop culture and well verse in comic book cliche as that is most of the jokes. Also the writer don't dwell too long with jokes so it always come and goes. So if you couldn't get the joke quick enough you might find the movie a little boring at times. The theater that I went most of the people couldn't get the joke quick enough hence I was a little bit shy to laugh out loud when no one is laughing. My best advice is to stay away from TV Spot or trailer as many as possible so you can enjoy the movie as much as possible. Oh, stay tuned at the very end of the credit because there is hilarious spoof of end credit scene.

Overall, Deadpool while has a very generic storyline, it still enjoyable due to its different take of superhero and X-Men movie in general. I am very excited to see where the sequel takes and can it bring the jokes up a notch. If 22 Jump Street proves anything, is that you can kick up the joke a notch in the sequel. In the end, I gave Deadpool a 4.0 out of 5.0. Solid movie, story a little bit generic, CGI a little bit noticable but overall and enjoyable movie.
