Legend of Korra Book 4 Episode 1 review. Mild Spoiler

The final book for Legend Korra debuted tonight. With the series being only shown online after the rating drop during last season, can this final season get back to its feet ? Hit the jump to find out. MILD SPOILER AHEAD

This final season is somehow, ironic. The last season shows Korra was broken both physically and mentally, and this season should be focusing on her to gain her own confidence. Ironically, last season had a rating drop causing it to be pulled off from the its TV show to the online medium, and seemingly this season will have to try to retain its fan after that 'fall'.

I missed book 3, so I had to catch up before this season started. While it has great changes to see it is sort of not a happy ending, I do think the season finale would be much much better if someone died. To keep maintain Korra's circle status quo really hurt that finale.

What do we think of this new season ? As a primer, this season with a three year time skip with the Earth Kingdom is rebuilding with a new emperor. However, at the same time, Kuvira, the new character that was introduced at the end of season three is seemingly conquering the Earth Kingdom. Bolin, Mako, Asami, and the Air Nomad people have taken their own path while Korra has been away to recover.  At the end of the episode, it was revealed that Korra  has been away, taking her own adventure.

In term of animation, Avatar always have great animation. One particular scene in this episode is when Kuvira versus the bandits. I also like that the new look of the Air Nomad. The jump suit really suits  the modern time and really allow some great fighting scene.

Story wise, this episode is mostly to establish conflicts for future episode. One thing that I worry for this season is that, again, it took too much time to recap what happen in between because there is a lot of rising question towards this episode. The previous three seasons has been doing that, and I do think it sometimes hurt the plot and hurt it momentum. From the look of this first episode, it will maintains its huge cast of characters. One issue that I have with last season is that there is too many characters and I got a feeling either that some of the characters development will be hurt or the plot will be hurt.

I still have trust with this season. I intrigue with where is Korra is right now and how does everything become end up to this new status quo. However, I do think this is now a strong opening for the season. It is surely a weaker opening compared to its previous seasons. For this first episodes, I'll give 3.5 out 5 because it did enough to get me intrigue for this season but it is not a strong opening.
