Fast and Furious 8 review

Fast and Furious returns for any adrenaline fueled installment. After the highly personal ending of seven, can this one too it or have it reached its peak already ? Hit the jump to read my thought.

Fast & Furious 8 (FF8) has a lot to live up to especially with the critically and financially success​ of the previous one. At the same time, it also had some bumpy road when The Rock suddenly accused some of his male co-cast to be chicken ass. In the end, did FF8 survives all these ? My answer is it manages to be on par on the franchise’s best but definitely not the best one.

But first, let's recap the plot first. The story took place sometime after the seventh, and all of the member resumes their life with Dom and Letty are enjoying their married lives. However, it all change when Dom suddenly when rogue and join Cipher (Theron) for am unknown mission. To save Dom, Letty with the rest of the family ( now joined by Ramsey) join forces with Luke (The Rock) and Mr. Nobody’s (Russel) agency. But to their shock, they are also joined by former enemy, Owen Shaw (Statham).

In term of plot, this has a spectacular story flow where few element set up in the beginning paid off at the end. Every scene had its purpose and it feels more structured and definitely more personal. It also rewards long time fan by bringing some of former cast from previous installment in an organic way.

The reason why Dom went rogue was a big revelation to the movie which I shall not twist. But it does provide possibly the best scene in the movie.

The returning cast brought their A-game for this movie with Vin Diesel got several emotional moments. The highlight though is definitely The Rock and Jason Statham. The Rock continues to bring his charisma in the movie and play around on the comedic site as well. Statham on the other hand had the best action scene in the movie during the plane fight at the end. Scott Eastwood joined the cast as possibly the future replacement​ of Brian O Connor. Also special shout out to Helen Mirren for her scene with Statham.

Kudos also has to be given to the director, F Gary Gray. In my FF7 review, I’ve mentioned it was quite uncomfortable to watch all the sexy lady and butt shot in the movie. For this one, they decided to get it out of the way by putting it right at the beginning. That being said though, if you are still uncomfortable with it, it might took you out immediately.

The cinematography is seemingly had a Zach Snyder influence a little bit but it also carries the one brought by James Wan, making it looks consistent with it's predecessor.

Despite the complements, it has its flaws. It lack excitement in comparison to the previous one. It might be the audience I watched with as none of them cheers but James Wan used Abu Dhabi to the fullest and he definitely punched up the color a bit but this one was a little bit mute in color.

The villain played by Charlize Theron while dangerous, I wasn’t sure what her plan was. I think it is because she used too​ many allegory and it ended​ up confuse me.

Overall, FF8 was a good capped off for the storylines that begin in five and hopefully the ninth installment brings a new storyline for the Torreto family. In the end, I gave Fast and Furious 8 a 3.5 out 5.0 . A perfectly good movie but it lacks excitement from the action and a confusing goal for the villain.
